India is now the fourth largest economy in the world, ahead of Japan, said NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam on Saturday. Speaking to the media after the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, he mentioned that the current global and economic situation is working in India’s favor.

1. India Overtakes Japan to Become World’s 4th Largest Economy
While addressing reporters after the 10th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog, CEO BVR Subrahmanyam announced that India has now become the fourth largest economy in the world, surpassing Japan.
2. India’s Economy Reaches $4 Trillion
Subrahmanyam stated, “We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy.” He added that the current global geopolitical and economic environment is favorable for India’s growth.
3. Only Three Economies Ahead of India
Quoting IMF data, he mentioned that only the United States, China, and Germany are ahead of India in terms of GDP. He also said that India is expected to become the third largest economy in the next 2.5 to 3 years if the country continues on its planned growth path.
4. Manufacturing in India to Remain Competitive
When asked about former US President Donald Trump’s comments suggesting iPhones should be made in the USA rather than India, Subrahmanyam responded by saying that India will remain a cost-effective destination for manufacturing, regardless of possible tariff changes.
5. Second Phase of Asset Monetisation Coming in August
He also revealed that the government is preparing the second round of the asset monetisation pipeline, which is expected to be officially announced in August 2025.
